Nat W. Finston

Nat W. Finston (born February 24, 1895 in New York , New York , † December 19, 1979 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American composer and conductor .

biography

Nat W. Finston attended New York City College. After graduating, he worked as a violinist and later as concertmaster of the Russian Symphony Orchestra . As deputy concertmaster he got engagements at the Boston Opera, with the New York Philharmonic (under Gustav Mahler ) and the New York Symphony Society between 1907 and 1917 . From 1917 to 1920 he was a conductor at the Capitol Theater and the Rialto Theater in New York and the Tivoli and Uptown Theater in Chicago.

In 1928 Finston went to Hollywood to work as music director for Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer . He was also guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Finston was nominated twice for an Oscar for best film music , in 1936 for Mutiny on the Bounty and in 1938 for May Time . Herbert Stothart composed the music for both MGM productions .

In recent years in the film business, Nat W. Finston has been responsible almost exclusively for the soundtracks for documentaries . In 1950 he retired and became a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers . Here he worked in particular with Gus Kahn .

Nat W. Finston, the father of twin daughters, died on December 9, 1979.
