Conil de la Frontera is a southern Spanish city in Andalusia . It belongs to the province of Cádiz in the Comarca La Janda and is located between Cádiz and Gibraltar on the Atlantic Ocean on the Costa de la Luz , the "Coast of Light". Conil has 22,529 inhabitants (January 1, 2019), in summer up to 80,000 tourists flock to this “white village”, which is part of the Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos , the route of the white villages.
In the past, the village of Conil lived mainly from fishing and agriculture. The traditional tuna fishing , the almadraba , was of great importance. Today the atmosphere of the place is international and mainly characterized by tourism , language and surfing schools .
history
The history of Conil goes back to the Phoenicians , who settled in 1500 BC. BC settled in this place. Individual finds, such as the remains of a Phoenician necropolis , bear witness to this time. The essential part of the Conilean economy has always been fishing. The city's proximity to abundant fishing areas has always made it particularly attractive for conquerors and looters. After the Moorish settlement, the place went over to the dominion of Alonso Pérez de Guzmán after the conquest by the Christians. The former lookout tower Torre de Guzmán is a reminder of this and refers to the former defensive character of the village. But not much of the city walls has survived.

tourism
As in other coastal towns on the Costa de la Luz , it gets a bit fuller and livelier here in the summer months, when the Spaniards also go on vacation. If you are looking for the atmosphere of the quiet fishing village, you should avoid August in particular. Outside the season it is quieter and many restaurants are therefore closed over the winter. Conil is also a popular place for surfers due to the favorable wind conditions. In the old town, with small alleys and white houses, there are numerous shops, bars and restaurants.
Just outside in a northerly direction is the small port of Conil. Behind the port are the rocky bays of Roche, which are counted among the most beautiful beaches in Andalusia. Various small bays can be reached via stone stairs. With the often strong wind, these are a good refuge for bathing and sunbathing. The lighthouse of Conil rises above the port, from which the mountains of Africa can be seen.
There is a total of around 14 kilometers of beach in Conil, including Playa de los Bateles, Playa Fuente del Gallo, Playa el Castilnovo and Cala del Aceite. At Playa el Castilnovo there is the Torre de Castilnovo, a medieval watchtower that was built in the 16th century.
A special feature of Conil is that the large hotels are all outside, north of the city. This gives Conil the character of a small fishing village, although tourists can easily reach the city on foot.
To the south, Cape Trafalgar (Cabo T.) protrudes into the Atlantic and forms the northwestern gate pillar of the Strait of Gibraltar .
In order to promote tourism in the city, the gastronomy association organizes various events every year, at which many local restaurants offer regional specialties, for example dishes with the famous red tuna of the Almadraba .
