Frédéric Gilliard (born June 18, 1884 in Sion ; † September 13, 1967 in Lausanne ) was a Swiss architect and archaeologist .

Frédéric Gilliard was the son of the landowner Edmond Gilliard and his wife Marie (née Malherbe). His brothers were:

He was the cousin of Charles Gilliard (born February 16, 1879 in Fiez, † September 19, 1944 in Lausanne), President of the Société d'histoire de la Suisse romande , the General History Research Society of Switzerland and the Federal Matura Commission .

From 1904 to 1909 he studied architecture at the Polytechnic in Zurich and continued this in 1909 at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he graduated in 1910.

After returning to Lausanne, he initially worked in the Bonnard & Picot office until he and his school friend Frédéric Godet (1885–1937) opened their own architecture office in 1913.

He specialized as an expert in various restorations , including the Chillon Castle and the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Lausanne. He was in charge of the maintenance of many historical buildings in Lausanne's old town, the Buttin-de-Loës house in Grandvaux , and around thirty churches in western Switzerland, especially in the canton of Vaud , including the churches of Villette , Coppet , Commugny , Bassins , Combremont- le-Petit , Bière , Assens and in particular the reformed church of Saint-Étienne in Moudon and the castles of L'Isle and Vufflens .

From 1918 to 1931 he was involved in social housing and built several workers' settlements and houses in Lausanne, including the Prélaz complex, churches in the Vennes and Bellevaux districts in Lausanne, in Le Mont-sur-Lausanne and in Bougy- Villars , schools in Sainte-Croix , Renens , Perroy and Arnex-sur-Orbe , the Ecole des métiers in Lausanne together with Charles Dubois and Jacques Favarger (1889–1967), and the psychogeriatric department of the hospital in Cery .

He led the excavations of the vicus Lousonna in Vidy in Lausanne and founded the Roman Museum Lausanne-Vidy there in 1936 .

Frédéric Gilliard was married to Marguerite Emma, ​​daughter of Gustave Edouard Climent from Cartigny .

  • In 1910, Frédéric Gilliard founded the Société d'art public and the Vaudois Section of the Swiss Homeland Security , of which he was President from 1921 to 1922.
