history

Basins

The discovery of a burial ground from the early Middle Ages testifies to an early settlement of the municipality. The place was first mentioned in a document in 974 under the name of Bassinges . In 1148 the Latinized form Bassiniacum appeared and the current name has been documented since 1164. The place name goes back to the personal name Basso and means for the people of the Basso .

A small Cluniac priory developed near the Church of Notre-Dame, which was subordinate to Payerne Abbey. Although the priory was not officially abolished until 1536, it was probably abandoned by the monks in the 14th century. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Bassins came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick and was the seat of a court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force .

Attractions

The originally Romanesque building of the Notre-Dame church has been rebuilt several times in the Gothic period and more recently (last time in 1934). The oldest components from the 11th and 12th centuries are the Romanesque choir and the substructure of the massive tower, which today shows the Burgundian style. The small and large side chapels date from the early 14th century. Some farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.
