Dully is a municipality in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

Dully lies at 420  m above sea level. M. , 7 km northeast of the district capital Nyon (air line). The street line village extends on a ledge on the edge of the plateau at the foot of the Vaudois Côte, bordered by the Dullive valley in the west and by Lake Geneva in the east, in a panoramic position around 50 m above lake level.

The area of ​​the 1.7 km² municipal area comprises a small section on the north-west bank of Lake Geneva. The communal soil extends from the lakeshore to the northwest over the flat edge of the bank and up the slope to the terrace at the foot of the Côte. Here with 428  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Dully. The western border is formed by the course of the Dullive , which flows into Lake Geneva with a small alluvial cone; in the northwest the border runs along the Fossy brook . In 1997, 25% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 17% for forests and woodlands and 58% for agriculture.

The hamlets of Bourg d'Amont ( 422  m above sea level ) and Saint-Bonnet ( 424  m above sea level ), both on the edge of the plateau between the Dullive and Lake Geneva, belong to Dully . Neighboring municipalities to Dully are Gland , Luins , Bursins and Bursinel .

With 633 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Dully is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 66.2% of the residents are French-speaking, 15.5% English-speaking and 10.4% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Dully was 180 in 1850 and 181 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 125 by 1970, the population began to grow rapidly, almost quadrupling the number of inhabitants within 30 years.

economy

Dully was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Agriculture still plays an important role as a livelihood for the population. It focuses on viticulture on the steep slope below the village and on arable farming . Further jobs are available in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Nyon .

traffic

Although the community is located away from major thoroughfares, it is still well developed in terms of traffic. It can be easily reached from main road 1 , which leads from Geneva along the lake shore to Lausanne . The village is connected to the public transport network by a postbus course that runs from Gland to Rolle .

history

Remains of a pile dwelling settlement from the Neolithic era were discovered on the lakeshore near Dully . Evidence of later settlement is a Roman milestone and graves from the early Middle Ages . The place was first mentioned in a document in 1238 under the name Delui . In the 13th century the names Dekuz and Diluth appeared , then Dullict and Dulicium and in 1867 Dullit .

In the Middle Ages , Dully was the seat of the noble von Dullit family, who were vassals of the Lords of Prangins . Later the owner of Dully changed several times. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Morges . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Dully belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Rolle district.
