Gingins is a municipality in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Gingins lies at 542  m above sea level. M. , 5 km northwest of the district capital Nyon (air line). The village extends at the southern foot of the Jura , at the foot of La Dôle , in a panoramic position around 170 m above lake level of Lake Geneva .

The area of the municipal area of 12.6 km² comprises a section of the Vaud Jura and the southern slopes of the Jura. The municipality floor extends in a narrow strip from the Asse river to the northwest up the densely forested Jura slope ( Bois d'Arpey , Bois des Balandes ) to the height of La Barillette ( 1528  m above sea level ), the eastern foothill of the La Dole. To the northwest of the Barillette, the basin of Le Vuarne and the Pointe de Poêle Chaud ( 1628  m above sea level ) join the Pointe de Fin Château ( 1556  m above sea level ). The western slope of the Dôle (at 1677  m above sea level, the highest point in the municipality) and the Couvaloup ski station are also part of the municipality of Gingins. On the anticline of the Dôle there are extensive Jura high pastures with the typical mighty spruce trees , which either stand individually or in groups. In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was settled, 57% forest and woodland, 35% agriculture and a little less than 2% was unproductive land.

Gingins has several large single-family quarters and a few individual courtyards. The neighboring communities of Gingins are La Rippe in the west, Chéserex in the south, Grens in the south-southeast , Trélex in the north - east and Saint-Cergue in the canton of Vaud in the north and Prémanon in neighboring France in the north-west .

population

With 1221 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Gingins is one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Vaud. 76.9% of the residents are French-speaking, 11.0% English-speaking and 7.5% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Gingins was 397 in 1850 and 377 in 1900. After 1960 (366 inhabitants) the population increased rapidly, with the number of inhabitants tripling within 40 years.

economy

Gingins was mainly an agricultural village until the middle of the 20th century . Today agriculture focuses on arable farming on the foot of the Jura, as well as on cattle and dairy farming in the higher municipal areas. Because of the large proportion of forests, forestry also has a certain importance. There are other jobs in trade and the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Nyon and Geneva .

traffic

Although the community is located away from major thoroughfares, it is still well developed in terms of traffic. The Nyon motorway junction on the A1 (Geneva-Lausanne) is only around 3 km from the town. The village is connected to public transport through a postbus course that connects Gingins with Nyon.

history

Remnants of a lead foundry used during Roman times point to an early settlement of the municipality. Gingins was originally called Gimmianus . In the 12th century, the Divonne rule was divided between two heirs, one of whom received the eastern part and thus established the Gingin rule.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Gingins came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick and formed the Kastlanei Gingins within it. When the Bonmont Bailiwick broke away from Nyon in 1711 , the village was added to it. The rule of Gingin, which was dependent on the respective sovereignty, lasted until 1757. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Gingins belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Nyon district.

Attractions

Saint Laurent Church

The Reformed Church of Saint-Laurent was first mentioned in 1211. The building is essentially Romanesque , but was enlarged during the Gothic ; the front tower also shows Gothic styles. Further alterations and renovations took place later. The rectory next to the church dates from the 18th century. The castle of Gingins, a massive square building flanked by three towers, was built in 1440–44. Despite several renovations, it has retained its medieval appearance. Some farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.
