Borex is a municipality in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Borex is 470  m above sea level. M. , 5 km west of the district capital Nyon (air line). The village extends on the plateau, which slopes slightly to the southeast, at the southern foot of the Jura , west of Lake Geneva .

The area of ​​the 2.0 km² municipal area includes a section at the southern foot of the Jura. The municipal soil extends from the river Boiron de Nyon northwards over the built-up area of ​​Borex to the corridor En Caudray , where at 511  m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached. In 1997, 18% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 2% for forests and woodlands and 80% for agriculture.

Borex includes the former hamlet of Petit Borex ( 482  m above sea level ) northwest of the village, the settlement of Les Tourniaux ( 471  m above sea level ) northeast of Borex and some individual farms. The neighboring municipalities of Borex are Crassier in the west , Arnex-sur-Nyon in the south, Eysin in the east, Signy-Avenex in the northeast, Grens in the north- northeast and Chéserex in the north .

With 1132 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Borex is one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 74.7% of the residents are French-speaking, 10.5% German-speaking and 7.9% English-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Borex was 121 in 1850 and 168 in 1900. After 1960 (201 inhabitants) there was a rapid increase in population with a four-fold increase in the number of inhabitants within 40 years.

economy

Borex was mainly an agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Viticulture is practiced to the east of the village , otherwise arable farming predominates on the fertile soils . Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the past few decades, Borex has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Nyon and Geneva .

The municipality is located near the main road from Nyon to Divonne-les-Bains in France . The Nyon motorway junction on the A1 (Geneva-Lausanne) is only around 3 km from the village. The Postbus course, which runs from Nyon to Coppet , connects Borex to the public transport network. On the 1905-62 railway line from Nyon via Crassier to Divonne-les-Bains, Borex had a small train station.

history

The first written mention of the village took place in 1213 under the name Borrai ; in the 19th century the spelling Borrex appeared . Since the first mention, Borex belonged to the Crassier rule. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Borex belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force .

Attractions

The remains of a Roman aqueduct that carried the water from Divonne to Nyon (Colonia Iulia Equestris) are still visible. In the old town center of Borex there are farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries. Borex does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Crassier .
