Mies is a municipality in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Mies lies at 410  m above sea level. M. , in the extreme southwest of Vaud, 12 km north of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends near the west bank of Lake Geneva on a slope gently sloping towards the lake, south of the small valley cut of the Nant stream .

The 3.5 km² municipal area covers a section on the west bank of Lake Geneva. The communal soil extends westward from the lakeshore over the edge of the bank and onto the adjacent ridge with the forest area Forêt de Veytay . The highest point of Mies reaches 455  m above sea level. M. The western border of the municipality runs along the canalized Creuson , a side stream of the Versoix . The northern border is initially formed by the Torry stream and, after it flows into the Nant, by this. The Nant, which flows directly into Lake Geneva, has created a small valley near Mies. The municipal area also includes the two nature reserves Gouille Marion , a pond with an adjacent marshland in the Forêt de Veytay, and Les Crénées on the shores of Lake Geneva. In 1997, 29% of the municipal area was settled, 35% forest and woodland, 35% agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

Mies includes extensive single-family houses and villa quarters as well as Gut Veytay ( 450  m above sea level ) on the ridge. The neighboring municipalities of Mies are Tannay and Chavannes-des-Bois in the canton of Vaud and Versoix in the canton of Geneva .

population

With 2078 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Mies is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 73.1% of the residents are French-speaking, 10.1% English-speaking and 6.5% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Mies was 162 inhabitants in 1850 and 223 in 1900. Particularly in the last few decades there has been a strong increase in population (only 640 inhabitants in 1960).

economy

Until the first half of the 20th century, Mies was mainly an agricultural village. Today agriculture only plays a marginal role as a source of income for the village population, it concentrates on arable farming . With 150 hectares, the Veytay estate is the largest in the canton of Vaud. Further jobs are available in local trade and especially in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who mainly work in Geneva . Mies is the seat of both the motorcycle and basketball world associations .

traffic

The community has good transport connections. It is on the road from Versoix to Divonne-les-Bains . On April 24, 1858, the railway line from Coppet to Versoix was put into operation with a stop in Mies. Hauptstrasse 1 runs along the lakeshore .

history

Mies can look back on a very long tradition of settlement. Remains from all eras since the Bronze Age have been discovered in the municipality . The first written mention of the place took place in 1345 under the name Mie . In the following years numerous other spellings appeared: Miez , Mier , Myez , Myer , Myes and only in 1912 Mies . The origin of the place name is controversial, it probably comes from the old French mi ( in the middle of ), which refers to half the way from Geneva to Nyon or from Versoix to Coppet.

Mies belonged to the Coppet rule in the Middle Ages . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Mies belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Nyon district.

Attractions

Mies' parish hall was built in 1912. The bridge over the Torry dates from 1855. The manor Château des Crénées is slightly elevated above the shores of Lake Geneva. Mies does not own a church, it belongs to the parish of Commugny .
