Givrins is a municipality in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Givrins lies at 546  m above sea level. M. , 6 km north-northwest of the district capital Nyon (air line). The village extends on the lower southern slope of the Jura , east of the Colline valley cut , in a panoramic position around 170 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva .

The area of the 4.0 km² municipal area covers a section of the southern slopes of the Jura. The communal soil extends to the northwest, first over the gently rising slope in the area of the village and then over the wooded steep slope of the Côtes de Givrins to the edge of the plateau near Saint-Cergue. Here with 1020  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Givrins. The western boundary forms the valley section of the Colline stream , in whose headwaters the Combe de Créva Tsevau , a steep valley below Saint-Cergue, is located. In 1997, 12% of the municipal area was in settlements, 44% in forests and woodlands, 43% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

Givrins has several large single-family houses on the edge of the forest above the village, as well as a few individual farms. The neighboring municipalities of Givrins are Saint-Cergue , Trélex , Duillier , Genolier and Arzier-Le Muids .

population

With 1,026 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Givrins is one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 76.2% of the residents are French-speaking, 10.1% English-speaking and 10.0% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Givrins was 317 in 1850 and 299 in 1900. After 1960 (228 inhabitants) a rapid increase in population began with a four-fold increase in the number of inhabitants within 40 years.

economy

Givrins was mainly an agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Today agriculture is concentrated on arable farming at the foot of the Jura, in the lowest part of the municipality there is a smaller vineyard . Because of the relatively large proportion of forests, forestry has also had a certain importance since the 17th century . There are other jobs in local trade and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Nyon and Geneva .

traffic

Although the community is located away from major thoroughfares, it is still well developed in terms of traffic. The Nyon motorway junction on the A1 (Geneva-Lausanne) is only 4 km from the town. On July 12, 1916, the Nyon - Saint-Cergue railway line with a station in Givrins went into operation.

history

Traces of settlement from Roman times and an early medieval burial site were discovered in the municipality . The place was first mentioned in a document in 1154 under the name Geurins , later the names Giuriacum (1155), Gyvrins (1387), Gevryn (1517) and Giurins appeared . The place name is probably derived from the Burgundian personal name Giverius .

Givrins has been under the rule of Genolians since the Middle Ages . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Givrins came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Nyon district.

Attractions

Givrins Church was built in 1964; the place has belonged to the parish of Genolier since 1840. Some farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.
