history

Traces of Roman settlement and a milestone have been found at Le Gachet . The first written mention of the place took place in 1224 under the name Fosnay , in 1251 the name Founai appeared . In the Middle Ages , Founex first belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Maurice and came to the barony around 1270, and in 1484 to the dominion of Coppet.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick . The Châtaigneraie, which was dependent on the Cistercian monastery of Bonmont in the 13th century , and the hamlet of Le Gachet formed an independent municipality until 1764. It was then merged with Founex. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Founex belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Nyon district.
