Tannay is a municipality in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Tannay lies at 410 m above sea level. M. , in the extreme southwest of Vaud, 12 km north of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends near the west bank of Lake Geneva on a slope gently sloping towards the lake, north of the small valley cut of the Nant stream .
The area of the 1.8 km² municipal area includes a small section on the west bank of Lake Geneva. The community soil extends westward from the lakeshore over the edge of the bank and onto the adjacent ridge. The highest point of Tannay reaches 463 m above sea level. M. The western border of the municipality runs along the canalized Creuson , a side stream of the Versoix . The southern border is initially formed by the Torry stream and, after it flows into the Nant, by this. The Nant, which flows directly into Lake Geneva, has created a small valley near Tannay. In 1997, 34% of the municipal area was in settlements, 14% in forests and woodlands, 51% in agriculture and around 1% was unproductive land.
Tannay includes extensive single-family home quarters. Tannay's neighboring communities are Mies , Chavannes-des-Bois , Commugny and Coppet .

With 1573 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Tannay is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the residents, 70.7% are French-speaking, 10.0% German-speaking and 9.1% English-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Tannay was 135 in 1900. After 1960 (360 inhabitants) the population increased rapidly, with the number of inhabitants tripling within 40 years.
economy
Tannay was mainly an agricultural village until the middle of the 20th century . Today agriculture only plays a minor role as a source of income for the village population; it focuses on agriculture . Jobs are available in local trade and the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Geneva .
traffic
The community has good transport connections. It is on the road from Versoix to Divonne-les-Bains . On April 24, 1858, the railway from Coppet to Versoix was put into operation with a stop in Tannay. Hauptstrasse 1 runs along the lakeshore .
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 1390 under the name Taney . Tannay belonged to the Coppet rule in the Middle Ages . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Tannay belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Nyon district.
Attractions
The castle of Tannay was built in the first half of the 17th century and was restored and rebuilt several times in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today it houses the municipal administration. Tannay does not own a church, it belongs to the parish of Commugny .
