About this picture
w

Gilly ([ ʒiji ], in the native Franco-Provencal dialect [ ʒiʎiː ]) is a municipality in the Nyon district of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Gilly lies at 484  m above sea level. M. , 10 km north-northeast of the district capital Nyon (air line). The wine-growing village extends slightly higher on the lower southern slope of the Vaudois Côte, in a panoramic position around 100 m above lake level of Lake Geneva .

The area of the 7.8 km² municipal area covers a section of the Vaudois Côte. The municipal soil extends from the edge of the shoreline of Lake Geneva north to the plateau at the foot of the Vaudois Côte. This is followed by the steep slope of the Côte on both sides of the Flon de Vincy stream . The Flon de Vincy basin is sunk into the plateau above the Côte. The highest point of Gilly is 895  m above sea level. M. in the forest area Le Saugey . The western border is formed by the Merdasson brook , which has also carved a deep basin in its headwaters due to erosion over time, the Combe de Bursins , of which the eastern slope of the valley still belongs to Gilly. In 1997, 9% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 35% by forests and trees and 56% by agriculture.

Gilly includes the hamlet of Vincy ( 534  m above sea level ) on the slope of the Côte west of the Flon de Vincy stream as well as numerous wineries and individual farms. Gilly's neighboring communities are Bursinel , Bursins , Burtigny , Essertines-sur-Rolle , Tartegnin and Rolle .

population

With 1,322 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Gilly is one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the residents, 83.1% are French-speaking, 6.1% German-speaking and 3.9% English-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Gilly was 622 in 1850 and 646 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 507 by 1960, an upward trend has been observed since then.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Gilly was predominantly an agricultural village. Agriculture still plays an important role as a livelihood for the population. On the entire slope of the Côte below an altitude of 550 to 600  m above sea level. M. is operated viticulture . On the plateau at the foot of the slope, agriculture and fruit growing predominate on the fertile soils . Further jobs are available in trade and especially in the service sector. The eastern part of the La Côte service area is located on the A1 motorway (Geneva-Lausanne) in the municipality . In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many employees work abroad and sometimes commute to the cities of Lausanne and Geneva .

traffic

The community has good transport connections. It lies a little above the main road that leads from Nyon along the slopes of the Côte to Aubonne . Gilly is connected to the public transport network through the Postbus course that runs from Gland to Rolle . On April 14, 1858, the section from Morges to Coppet of the Lausanne-Geneva railway line went into operation. The Gilly-Bursinel train station is just outside the municipality.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1179 under the name Jusliaco , in 1228 the name Gillie appeared . The place name is probably due to the Gallo-Roman personal name Gillius . In the Middle Ages, the Romainmôtier monastery owned rich estates in the municipality . From the 14th century on, Gilly was subordinate to the lords of Rolle, Vincy and Mont-le-Grand.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Gilly came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Morges , where it had its own court of law. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Rolle district.
