The area is drained by the Ruisseau d'Oujon and Ruisseau de Montant streams, which are named Ruisseau de Cordex after their confluence . In the east, the municipality extends into the Bois de Chênes and to the edge of the valley formed by the Serine . The Bois de Chênes forest area (1.27 km²) with its boggy valleys was leased by the municipality to the canton of Vaud in 1961, which established a nature reserve that is also used for research purposes (this part of the forest is not open to the public). In 1997, 17% of the municipal area was in settlements, 33% in forests and woodlands, 49% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

The hamlet of La Caisserie ( 566  m above sea level ) on the Ruisseau de Montant, several large single-family houses and a few individual farms belong to Genolier . The neighboring villages of Genolier in the West Givrins , in the north Arzier-ARZIER , east Vich and in the north Coinsins .

population

With 1958 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Genolier is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 72.0% of the residents are French-speaking, 12.6% German-speaking and 9.7% English-speaking (as of 2000). After 1970 (387 inhabitants) a rapid increase in population began with a four-fold increase in the number of inhabitants within 30 years.

economy

Genolier was a predominantly agricultural village until the 20th century . Mills have been operated with the water power of the two streams flowing through Genolier since the end of the Middle Ages . An arms factory was built in the 17th century, an oil mill and a box factory in the 19th century . Today agriculture focuses on arable farming at the foot of the Jura, and there is also a smaller wine-growing area on the southern slope of the Clos de Barin. There are other jobs in trade and the service sector. Since 1974, Genolier has been the location of the Genolier Clinique private clinic, which specializes in acute medicine, especially in oncology and orthopedics . In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Nyon and Geneva .

traffic

Although the community is located away from major thoroughfares, it is still well developed in terms of traffic. The motorway connections Nyon and Gland on the A1 (Geneva-Lausanne) are each around 5 km from the village. On July 12, 1916, the railway line from Nyon to Saint-Cergue was put into operation. Stops are in Genolier, in the Châtel district and at the clinic in La Joy.

history

Finds of remains of a foundry from Roman times and grave fields from the High Middle Ages indicate an early settlement of the community area. The first written mention of the place took place in 1110 under the name Genolliacum ; later the names Genollei (1162), Genollie and 1867 Genollier appeared . In 1184 a small priory was founded in Genolier, but it never really developed because of its proximity to the Cistercian Abbey of Bonmont and the Carthusian monastery of Oujon (near Arzier ). The village belonged partly to the Lords of Mont and partly to those of Prangins, and in 1528 it finally came under the rule of Prangins.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Genolier came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Genolier belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Nyon district.

Attractions

The Reformed Parish Church of Notre-Dame was first mentioned in 1110. The single-nave building combines Romanesque and Gothic styles . The facade design is from 1526. In the village square there is a fountain from 1832. In the center of the village there are some typical farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
