Signy-Avenex is a municipality in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Signy-Avenex is 470  m above sea level. M. , 3 km west-northwest of the district capital Nyon (air line). The village extends on the plain sloping slightly to the southeast at the southern foot of the Jura , between Lake Geneva and the chain of La Dôle .

The area of ​​the 1.9 km² municipal area comprises a section of the plain at the foot of the Jura between the rivers of the Boiron de Nyon in the southwest and the Asse in the northeast. The highest point of Signy-Avenex reaches 489  m above sea level. M. below Grens. In 1997, 20% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 2% for forests and woodlands and 78% for agriculture.

With 594 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Signy-Avenex is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 78.7% of the residents are French-speaking, 11.8% English-speaking and 5.9% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Signy-Avenex was 94 in 1900. After 1960 (136 inhabitants) a rapid increase in population began with a tripling of the number of inhabitants within 40 years.

economy

Signy-Avenex was mainly an agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Today agriculture focuses on arable and fruit growing , there are several small wine-growing areas near the village . The aperitif Vitavin is made in Signy-Avenex. Further jobs are available in local trade and especially in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in Nyon and Geneva .

The place itself is away from the main thoroughfares, but is still excellently developed in terms of traffic. The Nyon motorway junction on the A1 (Geneva-Lausanne), which runs through the municipality, is only around 1 km from the town. history

From Roman times there are small remains of an aqueduct that carried the water from the Versoix to Colonia Iulia Equestris (Nyon). The first documentary mention of Signy took place in 1017 under the name Sigiciacum , later the names Signiacum and 1166 Signei appeared . Avenex was named as Avenacum as early as 926 .

In 1017 Signy and Avenex came as a gift from King Rudolf III. to the Abbey of Saint-Maurice . From the 12th century they belonged to the Lords of Prangins and finally came to the House of Savoy in the 14th century . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Signy-Avenex came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Nyon district.
