Ernest Mamboury

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernest Mamboury (born April 1, 1878 in Signy-Avenex , † September 23, 1953 in Istanbul ) was a Swiss draftsman and drawing teacher who published over four decades about Istanbul, where he also lived and was involved in almost all archaeological excavations.

life and work

Mamboury studied from 1894 to 1898 at the École normal in Lausanne , 1898–1903 in Geneva and 1904–05 at the Académie Julian in Paris . From 1909 he was professor for drawing and French at Galatasaray Lisesi in Istanbul.

In the course of his life in Istanbul, Mamboury has mainly dealt with the city's Byzantine monuments, but also with the new capital Ankara . He tried to at least sketchily document the numerous finds that were made during construction work before they were destroyed. He was involved in almost all archaeological excavations in the city between 1914 and 1953. From 1914 to 1918 he took part in excavations in the northeast of the Topkapı Palace , where conflagrations in 1912 and 1913 caused massive destruction, which made excavations in this area possible for the first time. With Le quartier des Manganes et la première région de Constantinople in 1939 he presented a 167-page work on the first large-scale scientific excavation in Istanbul. He also attached great importance to the analysis of brick stamps, which had appeared in scientific literature since 1828.

During the First World War , Mamboury worked with the German-Turkish Monument Protection Command for Syria and Palestine , which was active between Syria and Egypt from 1916 to 1918 under the direction of Theodor Wiegand .

In 1925 Mamboury published the first scientifically quotable guide through Istanbul. Only Semavi Eyices Petit Guide atravers les Monuments Byzantines et Turcs (1953) could be added to this work, but this work never made it onto the market, although it had been compiled for the Third Congress of Byzantine Studies .

Mamboury is buried in the Protestant cemetery in Feriköy .
