Semavi Eyice

Semavi Eyice (born December 9, 1922 in Istanbul ; † May 28, 2018 there ) was a Turkish art historian . His specialties were Byzantine art and the art history of Istanbul.

He grew up in Istanbul, attended elementary school in the Kadıköy district and then graduated from Galatasaray Lisesi by 1943 . During the Second World War he went to Germany to learn German. During this time he attended lectures in archeology , history and art history at the universities in Vienna and Berlin . In 1945 he returned to Turkey to continue his art history studies at the İstanbul Üniversitesi , which he completed in 1948 with Ernst Diez with a thesis on Istanbul minarets . He then worked as a research assistant in the art history department and received his doctorate in 1952 with the work Side'nin Bizan's Dönemine Ait Yapıları (Buildings of the Byzantine era in Side ). In 1955 he became an associate professor with the book Istanbul'da Son Devir Bizans Mimarisi (architecture of the late Byzantine period in Istanbul) . In 1964 he became a full professor at the newly established Chair of Byzantine Art. In the course of his teaching activities, he lectured at numerous institutes, including in Turkey at the Hacettepe University in Ankara and the Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul, abroad at the École pratique des hautes études , the Sorbonne and at the universities of Geneva and Bologna . In addition to his teaching activities, he was active in archaeological field research, including in the area of Binbirkilise , in various Byzantine settlements around Silifke in Cilicia , including Karakabaklı and Işıkkale , and in Eastern Thrace .

He has published books, magazine articles, and contributions to encyclopedic works. Eyice was a member of several research societies, including the German Archaeological Institute . In 1955 he received the order of the Legion d'honneur and in the same year a prize from the Turkish Academy of Sciences .

Eyice retired in 1990. He was married to Kâmran Yalgın since 1954.
