Chavannes-des-Bois is a municipality in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Chavannes-des-Bois is 469  m above sea level. M. , 12 km north of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies), in the extreme southwest of Vaud. The village extends on the ridge between the Versoix lowlands and Lake Geneva .

The area of ​​the 2.1 km² municipal area covers a section of the ridge between the Versoix in the west and Lake Geneva in the east. The municipal soil extends from the Versoix eastward over the height of Chavannes-des-Bois ( 482  m above sea level, the highest point of the municipality) to the canalized course of the Creuson , a left side stream of the Versoix. To the north the area extends into the Bois de Portes forest . In 1997, 10% of the municipal area was in settlements, 37% in forests and woodlands, 52% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

The neighboring communities of Chavannes-des-Bois are Commugny in the northeast , Tannay in the east and Mies in the canton of Vaud in the southeast, Versoix in the canton of Geneva in the southwest, and Grilly in neighboring France in the west and northwest .

With 982 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Chavannes-des-Bois is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. Of the residents, 73.8% are French-speaking, 9.3% German-speaking and 8.0% English-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Chavannes-des-Bois was 58 in 1850 and 68 in 1900. After 1960 (44 inhabitants) a rapid increase in population began with a nine-fold increase in the number of inhabitants within 40 years.

economy

Chavannes-des-Bois was mainly an agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Thanks to the fertile soil, agriculture predominates , and there are tree nurseries and two riding halls. Further jobs are available in the service sector. To the south of the village is the domed structure of the Geneva observatory in the municipal area, while the office buildings are on the territory of neighboring Versoix. In the last few decades Chavannes-des-Bois has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Geneva .

The community is located away from the major thoroughfares. Access is from Versoix or from Chavannes-de-Bogis . A cantonal road leads across the border into the neighboring French town of Sauverny . The Postbus course, which runs from Nyon to Coppet , connects Chavannes-des-Bois to the public transport network.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1316 under the name Les Chavannes de Sovernyer , in 1355 the name Cabane Nemorum appeared (derived from the Latin word nemus , nemoris meaning forest , wood ). Chavannes is derived from the vulgar Latin word capanna ( hut , small courtyard ). Since the Middle Ages , the area around Chavannes-des-Bois belonged to the Coppet dominion , which sold the lands to the Cistercian Abbey of Bonmont in 1355 . The Lords of Grilly also levied taxes in the village.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Chavannes-des-Bois came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick and in 1711 under the Bonmont Bailiwick. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Chavannes-des-Bois belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . The place does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Commugny .
