history
Coppet can look back on a very long tradition of settlement. Remains of a settlement from the Bronze Age were found on the lake shore . There are also traces of Roman times : a milestone, a grave stele and the remains of a villa. The origin of Coppet is a farm that belonged to Commugny. The Lords of Thoire-Villars acquired the area from the House of Savoy in 1271 and founded the castle and the market town of Coppet, which was given city rights from the beginning. The town was first mentioned in a document in 1294 under the name Copetum , and in 1347 the spelling Copet appeared .
1314 came the rule of Coppet to the noble family Allamand. The Duke of Savoy brought Coppet together with other fiefdoms in 1484 and made it a baron. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the town came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick . The Freiherrschaft Coppet, whose owner changed several times, but had high jurisdiction. As a city on the border between Vaud and the Pays de Gex, Coppet benefited from the transport industry. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Coppet belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Nyon district and in 1803 the capital of a district. Under Germaine de Staël , who gathered people of political and intellectual-literary rank at the castle during the Napoleonic period, Coppet achieved European fame.
