history

Coppet can look back on a very long tradition of settlement. Remains of a settlement from the Bronze Age were found on the lake shore . There are also traces of Roman times : a milestone, a grave stele and the remains of a villa. The origin of Coppet is a farm that belonged to Commugny. The Lords of Thoire-Villars acquired the area from the House of Savoy in 1271 and founded the castle and the market town of Coppet, which was given city rights from the beginning. The town was first mentioned in a document in 1294 under the name Copetum , and in 1347 the spelling Copet appeared .

1314 came the rule of Coppet to the noble family Allamand. The Duke of Savoy brought Coppet together with other fiefdoms in 1484 and made it a baron. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the town came under the administration of the Nyon Bailiwick . The Freiherrschaft Coppet, whose owner changed several times, but had high jurisdiction. As a city on the border between Vaud and the Pays de Gex, Coppet benefited from the transport industry. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Coppet belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Nyon district and in 1803 the capital of a district. Under Germaine de Staël , who gathered people of political and intellectual-literary rank at the castle during the Napoleonic period, Coppet achieved European fame.

For a long time, Coppet was an agricultural town. A sandstone pit was exploited from the 14th to the 19th century . Over time, some industry developed, especially watchmaking since the late 18th century . Today agriculture is only of minor importance; there is some viticulture and agriculture in the area. Jobs are available in trade and especially in the service sector. In recent decades, thanks to its attractive location on Lake Geneva, Coppet has developed into a residential community. Most of the employed are commuters (around 60%) who work mainly in Geneva . Coppet is the location of a secondary school.

The community is very well developed in terms of transport. It is located on main road 1 , which runs from Geneva along the lake to Lausanne . The Coppet motorway junction on the A1 (Geneva-Lausanne) is only 4 km from the town. There are several bus routes operated by Transports publics régionaux Nyon, which run from Coppet to Divonne-les-Bains and Nyon , among others, for the fine distribution of public transport .

Attractions

The historic town of Coppet has a medieval townscape with numerous arbor houses from the 16th century. The reformed parish church is the former convent church of the Dominican monastery founded in 1490 . The building was built around 1500 in the Gothic Flamboyant style and contains richly carved choir stalls from the 16th century; extensive restorations took place in 1774 and 1927. The Maison Michel, a late Gothic house, now houses the local museum.

Coppet Castle on the western edge of the town was rebuilt in 1767 on the site of the previous medieval building. It's in a French park. The horseshoe-shaped building has been open to the public since 1948. It contains rich furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries and important portraits.
