Karl Mittermaier (born June 18, 1956 in Brixen , South Tyrol , Italy ) is an author , journalist and musician .

Life

Mittermaier attended the Scientific Lyceum Bressanone and then studied philosophy, history, jurisprudence, art history, German and political science at the University of Innsbruck . In 1983 he graduated as Dr. phil. In 1991 he completed his second degree with a graduation for a Magister phil. (Major in political science) at the end, followed by the examination and transfer of the degree at the University of Padua .

He had teaching assignments as a contract assistant at the Leibniz Kolleg of the University of Tübingen , at the institutes for political science and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck and at the Philosophical-Theological University in Brixen (philosophy). He also worked as a freelancer for newspapers and magazines such as " Die Zeit ", " Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung " and " Die Presse ".

Mittermaier published numerous books on various topics. He initially dealt with scientific works of a historical and philosophical nature, but later also wrote novels, a volume of poetry and numerous popular writings. His two books "Machiavelli. Morals and Politics at the Beginning of Modern Times" and "Finding Happiness with God" attracted particular attention.

As a screenwriter he worked for films that were broadcast on ORF , RAI , Bayerischer Rundfunk and other German television stations. He is the founder and author of the television series " Gedankenspuren " for the RAI station Bozen (since 2014 RAI Südtirol ).

As a musician

Karl Mittermaier learned to play the electric bass guitar at a young age. In 1974 he brought the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar to the stages of South Tyrol with many committed amateur musicians .

In 2006 he founded the rock formation Tellura X with his son Hannes. Over the years, the band members changed again and again, which the unknown X is supposed to signalize in the name. In 2010 the band set seven English love texts from the pen of Karl Mittermaier to music on the CD "Love in Rock".

Two years later Mittermaier began to write the history of South Tyrol for a rock opera in German, which he called "The Three Crosses". Most of the 23 songs were set to music by Hannes Mittermaier. It is the first coherent setting of the history of South Tyrol from the First World War to the adoption of the Second Statute of Autonomy . The opera was premiered on August 8, 2014 with numerous guest musicians in Brixen. The focus of "The Three Crosses" is the real person Hans, who has experienced the time up close. Mittermaier's main objective in the text was to present the history of South Tyrol in the context of the two world wars in a value-neutral and historically correct manner. The three crosses also appeared as a double CD.
