Stephanie Kwolek
Stephanie Louise Kwolek (born July 31, 1923 in New Kensington , Pennsylvania , † June 18, 2014 in Wilmington , Delaware ) was an American chemist of Polish descent. She invented the synthetic fiber Kevlar .
life and career
Her parents were John Kwolek (1892-1934) (Polish: Jan Chwałek ) and Aniela Nellie Zajdel Kwolek (1898-1969), who worked in an aluminum factory after the death of her husband.
After Stephanie 1946 her chemistry degree from the Margaret Morrison Carnegie College, Carnegie Mellon University had acquired, they wanted medicine to study and become a doctor. To finance this, she took a job at DuPont . She should look there for synthetic fibers for the tire industry . There she developed the synthetic fiber Kevlar (aramid) in 1964 . However, she was hardly involved in the development of practical applications for Kevlar, and she was also not involved in the economic success of the fiber, since she had assigned the patent for Kevlar to her employer DuPont.
While experimenting with aromatic polyamides , she discovered their liquid-crystalline properties in 1965 .
