Kaja Kallas (born June 18, 1977 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician . She has been the Prime Minister of Estonia since January 26, 2021 . She belongs to the liberal Estonian Reform Party (Eesti Reformierakond) , of which she has been chairman since 2018. From 2014 to 2018 she was a member of the European Parliament .

Life

Kaja Kallas is the daughter of the former Estonian Prime Minister and EU Commissioner Siim Kallas . She passed her high school diploma in 1995 in the Estonian capital Tallinn. From 1995 to 1999 she studied law at the University of Tartu . In 1999 she was admitted to the Estonian Bar Association. In addition, since 2003 she has been a member of the executive boards and supervisory boards of numerous Estonian companies that deal with renewable energies .

In 2010, Kallas joined the liberal Estonian Reform Party, which is essentially oriented towards the EU and NATO and whose founding chairman was her father Siim Kallas from 1994 to 2004. In the Estonian parliamentary elections in March 2011, she was able to win a seat in the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) straight away . In the 2014 European Parliament elections , Kallas was elected to Strasbourg as one of six Estonian MPs.

In 2018 she was elected leader of the Estonian Reform Party. In this context, she resigned from the European Parliament at the beginning of September 2018, and Igor Gräzin replaced her . In March 2019, she and her party won the parliamentary elections, but failed to form a government and since then has been leader of the reform party in the Riigikogu . After the previous Prime Minister Jüri Ratas submitted his resignation on January 13, 2021, President Kersti Kaljulaid asked Kallas to form the new government again. After such a coalition did not come about immediately after the elections, Kallas agreed on January 25, 2021 with the Center Party to form a joint government. On January 26th, she took over the office of Prime Minister. She is the first female head of government in Estonia. Its cabinet consists of seven ministers each from the Reform and Center parties.

Personal

Kaja Kallas has been married to the Estonian investment banker Arvo Hallik since 2018 . She has a son with her former partner, the Estonian politician and businessman Taavi Veskimägi .
