Alexander De Croo (born November 3, 1975 in Vilvoorde ) is a Belgian entrepreneur and politician of the Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (Open VLD). He has been Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Development Aid since December 2018, currently in the federal government of Wilmès . From 2009 to 2012 he was chairman of the Open VLD.

Life

Alexander De Croo is the son of the politician Herman De Croo (Open VLD). He studied at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) until 1998 and then at the Northwestern University in Illinois .

On December 12, 2009, he was elected in the second voting round to succeed Guy Verhofstadt at the head of the Open VLD. He had not previously held a political mandate.

Initially, Alexander De Croo was elected to the Senate in 2010. On October 18, 2012, he moved to the federal government and became Deputy Prime Minister and Pension Minister in the government under Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo ( PS ). There he replaced his predecessor Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD), who in turn had accepted the mayor's office in Kortrijk .

After the federal elections on May 25, 2014, in which he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies , De Croo was given responsibility for development cooperation in the government under Prime Minister Charles Michel ( MR ). He also remained Vice Prime Minister.

De Croo is married and has two sons.
