biography

Matti Aura came from a family of well-known politicians: his grandfather Jalo Aura acted as minister for the civil service, while his father Teuvo Aura was not only the long-time mayor of Helsinki, but also Prime Minister of Finland twice .

After attending school, he completed an apprenticeship as a banker before he was President of the Central Chamber of Commerce between 1986 and 1997.

In 1995 he became a member of the Reichstag as a candidate for the National Collection Party and was a member of it until 1999. In 1997, Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen appointed him to succeed Tuula Linnainmaa as Minister of Transport in his government. He was forced to resign from this post in 1999 after growing public criticism after it became known that the general manager of the Sonera telecommunications company , Pekka Vennamo , was preferred when issuing shares in the group. Aura was accused of being too close to Sonera and Vennamo. Kimmo Sasi then became the new transport minister .

Matti Aura, who was most recently Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the port association, passed away after a short illness.
