Marjorie Westbury (born June 18, 1905 in Oldbury , Worcestershire , † December 16, 1989 in Maresfield near Uckfield , Sussex ) was a British actress , radio play speaker and singer .

Life

Marjorie Westbury studied singing at the Royal College of Music in London between 1927 and 1930 . In the 1930s the soprano appeared frequently as a singer in the BBC studios in Birmingham . From the end of the thirties she could also be seen as a radio play speaker. A small supporting role in the radio play series Paul Temple Intervenes ("Paul Temple intervenes") (1942) brought her in 1945 the female lead ("Steve Temple") in all other Paul Temple multi-parts . The radio play series by crime writer Francis Durbridge was produced by the BBC from 1938 and was not discontinued until 1968.

Her first partner in Send for Paul Temple Again was Barry Morse , later known as “Lt. Philip Gerard ”, the opponent of“ Dr. Richard Kimble ”( David Janssen ) in the US TV series On the Run, gained worldwide fame. After Howard Marion-Crawford spoke the title role in the next production A Case for Paul Temple , Kim Peacock took over this role in the next 10 productions up to 1953. Marjorie Westbury and Peter Coke then spoke the Temple couple until the series was discontinued . In the meantime, the remaining radio plays in this series have been re-broadcast by BBC Radio 4 Extra and have also appeared on CD, which has contributed to their renewed popularity, even with a younger audience.

With the part of the fictional Austrian soprano Elsa Strauss in the Hilda Tablet series by Henry Reed , she had another long-lasting role in radio in the 1950s . She also worked as a radio play speaker in the 1970s and 1980s.

Her career was mainly limited to the radio, which was probably due to her small and corpulent stature, which was a considerable contrast to her bright and lively youthful sounding voice.

For their 50th anniversary in radio, which she celebrated in 1983, she chose the role of Helen Lancaster in Waters of the Moon by NC Hunter .

Marjorie Westbury died at the age of 84 on December 16, 1989 in her farmhouse in Maresfield.
