Oldbury is a city in the West Midlands of England . It is located in the Black Country west of Birmingham and is the seat of the Borough of Sandwell .

Oldbury was a parish in County Shropshire until the late 19th century when it became an independent borough and incorporated into Worcestershire .

In 1966 , Oldbury merged with the east bordering community of Smethwick and southeast Rowley Regis to form the County Borough of Warley . The population of Oldbury-Smethwick is 139,529 ( 2006 ).

1974 Oldbury became part of the new Metropolitan Borough Sandwell (created from the merger of the county boroughs of West Bromwich and Warley); today Oldbury is in West Midlands Metropolitan County .

The M5 motorway runs through Oldbury. The city is also on the Birmingham- Wolverhampton railway line .

Comedian Frank Skinner and radio play speaker and singer Marjorie Westbury , known as Steve Temple in the English radio plays about the detective Paul Temple by Francis Durbridge, come from Oldbury .
