Wolfhart I von Brandis († June 18, 1371 in the Königsfelden monastery ) was a member of the Barons von Brandis , an old noble family from what is now the canton of Bern in what is now Switzerland . Under his rule, the Emmental was more closely linked to the city of Bern. The Barons von Brandis also expanded their activities and properties into the Upper Rhine Valley and the Lake Constance area during his time .

Life

Nothing is known about his place and date of birth. He was first mentioned in a document in 1341. He was a son of the son of Mangold I von Brandis and Margareta von Nellenburg. His older brother was Thuringia II von Brandis, his younger ones Eberhard von Brandis and Heinrich von Brandis, both of whom occupied higher positions in the church. A kind of land division was agreed with his older brother. Thuringia II was responsible for the possessions in the Bernese Oberland , Wolfhart I for the possessions in the Emmental. In 1351 he signed a castle law with the city of Bern, which was renewed again and again by his descendants. Around 1356 he married Agnes von Montfort-Feldkirch , the widow of Hartmann III. from Werdenberg-Sargans. From this marriage two sons emerged: Wolfhart IV. Von Brandis and Ulrich Thüring von Brandis . Through this marriage, his activities relocated to the Rhine Valley and the Lake Constance area.

In 1367 he bought his brother Thuringia II's rights in the Bernese Oberland and thus became the sole ruler of the territories of the Barons of Brandis. In the same year his brother Eberhard, who had in the meantime risen to abbot of Reichenau monastery, pledged the entire property of Reichenau monastery to him and to his brother Heinrich, abbot of Einsiedeln . This led to serious conflicts with the city of Constance , in which the Pope and the Emperor intervened. As early as 1358 Wolfhart I had taken over the administration of the Konstanz monastery, which led to differences with the city.

In 1363 Wolfhart I was involved with his brothers and nephews in the murder of the Provost of Constance. Up to the age of majority of the children from the first marriage of his wife Rudolf VI. von Werdenberg-Sargans , Heinrich V. von Werdenberg-Sargans and Hartmann IV. von Werdenberg-Sargans , he also ruled provisionally together with his wife over Sargans and the areas of today's Liechtenstein . Since the descendants of Hartmann III. von Werdenberg-Sargans had no inheritable heirs, Wolfhart I's children took over the Werdenbergs' areas in the Rhine Valley for the Barons von Brandis.
