Hartmann I. von Werdenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hartmann I. von Werdenberg († around 1271) was Count of Kraiburg and Marquartstein from 1256 to 1259 and later Count of Werdenberg. He is considered the progenitor of the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans .

Hartmann was the son of Rudolf I von Werdenberg and Clementias von Kyburg. He was the brother of Hugo I. von Werdenberg . Since 1256 he was the husband of Elisabeth, Rapoto III's only daughter . von Ortenburg , the Count Palatine of Bavaria and Counts of Kraiburg and Marquartstein.

After Rapoto's death in 1248, his widow Countess Adelheid led the government, now Hartmann I von Werdenberg took over the property. Since then Hartmann has called himself Count Palatine von Kraiburg , although he was never enfeoffed with the office of Count Palatine. After both Rudolf (already before 1247) and his younger brother Hugo had died, the Werdenberg family property was divided up in 1258, the counties over Churrätien , Tettnang , Bregenz , Feldkirch , Sonnenberg , Werdenberg and Sargans . In doing so he received the southern part of the Montfortic property; the Werdenberg family branched out into the main lines "Werdenberg-Heiligenberg" and "Werdenberg-Sargans".

As early as 1259, Hartmann sold the County of Kraiburg and the entire possessions of the former Ortenburg- Palatinate Count's house to the Wittelsbach Duke Heinrich XIII. from Lower Bavaria. This annexed the possessions to his duchy, which meant the end for the county.

Hartmann had held the title of comes de Werdenberch since 1259 at the latest and was the progenitor of the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans. His successor as Count von Werdenberg-Sargans was Rudolf II († 1322/23). His other two sons pursued clerical careers. So Hartmann II is attested as Canon of Bamberg and Hugo III. as a Johanniterkomtur in Wädenswil and Bubikon . Hartmann I. von Werdenberg died around 1271.
