Ulrich von Brandis (* 1425 ; † August 20, 1486 ) was a member of the Barons von Brandis , a noble family from the Swiss Bern .

Life

Little is known about his birth. He was the fourth son of Wolfhart V. von Brandis and his wife Verena von Werdenberg-Heiligenberg-Bludenz . He was married twice, first to Verena von Zimmer, then to Praxedis von Helfenstein . He was the father of Ludwig von Brandis , Sigmund II von Brandis , Johannes von Brandis and Verena von Brandis .

In 1455 he was mentioned in a document when the headquarters of the Lords of Brandis in Emmental were sold , which his father initiated. In 1456, after the death of his father, he and his brothers took control of the Brandische possessions in the Alpine Rhine Valley , namely the County of Vaduz , the dominion of Schellenberg , Blumenegg and Maienfeld . Together with his brothers Wolfhart VI. by Brandis and Sigmund I von Brandis he is mentioned in a letter from the king, which confirms the imperial immediacy of the rulers of Vaduz and Schellenberg .

Ulrich von Brandis maintained a close relationship with the Habsburgs . In the 1460s and 1470s he acted as governor of Feldkirch . He also entered into a defense alliance with the Habsburgs, which guaranteed him an annual income of 200 guilders. In 1462 he was able to take control of Marschlins Castle in Graubünden. He rebuilt the burned-out castle. After the death of his older brother Wolfhart VI. In 1477 he was head of the family.

To the displeasure of the Habsburgs, he also signed contracts with the up-and-coming Grisons and with the city of Chur .
