Wolfhart IV of Brandis

Wolfhart IV von Brandis († 1418 ) was a member of the Barons von Brandis , an old noble family from today's canton of Bern, Switzerland. He became known for taking control of what is now the Principality of Liechtenstein from his stepbrothers .

The year of his birth is not known. It can be assumed in 1356. He was a son of Agnes von Montfort-Feldkirch and her second husband Wolfhart I von Brandis . His mother was in his first marriage to Hartmann III. von Werdenberg-Sargans , the first count of the County of Vaduz . From this marriage he had three stepbrothers Hartmann IV. Von Werdenberg-Sargans , Heinrich V. von Werdenberg-Sargans , Rudolf VI. from Werdenberg-Sargans . Two of these later took control of Vaduz. He also had a biological brother, Ulrich Thüring von Brandis . After the death of his father in 1371, he and his brother inherited the property in the Bernese Emmental and the rule over Bischofszell which his father had received as a pledge from the prince abbey of St. Gallen . In 1376 he concluded an alliance with the imperial city of Bern and was incorporated into its castle law . In the Sempach War he fought on the side of the Habsburgs against the emerging old Confederation . After the battle of Sempach , he moved to eastern Switzerland. He lent his stepbrothers money and obtained control of what is now Liechtenstein through a pledge. 1399 over the county of Vaduz and 1416 over the rule Schellenberg .

Wolfhart IV von Brandis was married to Clementa von Thierstein . From this marriage came his heir Wolfhart V. von Brandis .
