The original Daina cabinet in the National Library of Latvia

The Daina cabinet ( Latvian Dainu skapis ) houses a collection of Latvian folk songs , the Dainas, compiled by Krišjānis barons . It symbolizes the folk song tradition as an important part of Latvia's self-identification and is sometimes referred to as the national shrine. The cabinet belongs since 2001 to the World Documentary Heritage of UNESCO .

In the 70 drawers of the cabinet there are more than 350,000 handwritten notes measuring 3 × 11 cm. The Dainas noted on it were sent to barons by thousands of informants, such as singers. This material forms the source for his extensive, multi-volume edition, which comprises almost 218,000 Dainas.

The cabinet itself was manufactured in Moscow around 1880 according to Baron's own design. It is 160 cm high, 66 cm wide and 42 cm long. From 1940 the cabinet was kept in the Latvian Folklore Archive for over 70 years, and since 2014 it has been on display in the Latvian National Library .

The Dainas were digitized between 1998 and 2006 so that the texts can now be recorded and accessed online.
