Bruno Lewin

Bruno Lewin (born July 18, 1924 in Berlin ; † June 18, 2012 in Hilden ) was a German Japanologist , Koreanist and linguist . As a professor he taught at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

Life

From 1946 Lewin studied Slavic studies , philosophy and general linguistics at the Humboldt University in Berlin . Already at this time he began to study Chinese. From 1948 he studied Japanese studies under Martin Ramming . After graduating with a degree in 1950, he first worked as a foreign language editor for a Berlin publishing house on language didactic publications, including several textbooks and a grammar for the Russian language.

In 1952 he resumed his studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Here he studied Japanese studies with Horst Hammitzsch , Sinology with Walter Fuchs and Herbert Franke , and Slavic studies with Erwin Koschmieder and Wilhelm Lettenbauer . In 1954 he received his doctorate at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a thesis on the subject of Futabatei Shimei in its relations with Russian literature , and in 1959 he received his habilitation from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a thesis on the topic of Aya and Hata : Population groups of ancient Japan of continental origin .

After completing his habilitation, Lewin, who had previously taught at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, first worked as a lecturer in East Asian philology, and from 1962 as a scientific adviser and professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

In 1964 he was appointed as the first professor at the East Asia Institute of the newly founded Ruhr University Bochum, where he worked until his retirement in 1989. One year after his appointment, he established Korean Studies as a separate subject. From 1981 he played a key role in the establishment of the Japonicum at the National Language Institute, on whose board of directors he sat until 1991.

In 1974 he became the first Japanologist to become a full member of the Rhenish-Westphalian Academy of Sciences . In the same year he was elected Vice President of the newly founded European Association for Japanese Studies . He held this office until 1978. In 1980 and 1981 he was Vice President of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe.

Lewin taught as visiting professor in 1967 at the University of Michigan , 1970 at the University of Minnesota , from 1975 to 1976 at the University of Zurich , and from 1981 to 1982 at the State Institute for Japanese Literature ( Japanese 国 文学 研究 資料 館 Kokubungaku Kenkyū Shiryōkan ) in Tokyo . As part of a university partnership, he also taught a total of three times at the University of Tokyo .

In 1996 he was honored for his work with the Order of the Holy Treasure on the necklace with golden rays. The European Association for Japanese Studies made him an honorary member.

research

Lewin researched primarily in the areas of linguistic Japanology and Korean studies, where he dealt in particular with the linguistic relationships between Japan and Korea and the origins of the Japanese language. He wrote numerous textbooks for Japanese and Korean , and in his early years also for Russian .

In 1989 he published his language and writing of Japan in the Handbuch der Orientalistik , which became a standard work in Japanese studies.

Lewin contributed to numerous reference books, including the Brockhaus Encyclopedia , the Encyclopedia of Japan, and the Japan Handbuch . As a translator, he translated parts of Shoku Nihongi and Nihon Kōki into German in 1962 .
