Ulrich "Ulli" Melkus (born April 19, 1950 in Dresden ; † June 18, 1990 near Speyer ) was one of the most famous automobile racing drivers in the GDR .

Life

Melkus was a graduate mechanical engineer and had two children.

As the son of Heinz Melkus , a racing car designer and successful racing driver, Ulli Melkus was born with motorsport. He worked as a driver and designer, e.g. B. the Melkus PT 73 Spyder and the formula car SRG MT 77 , followed in his father's footsteps and won many victories. He began his motorsport career at the age of 15 with motorcycle cross-country races, a year later he started kart racing and then rose to the GDR formula racing car at the age of 18, where he immediately won his first race. In 1984 he received the title " Master of Sports ", the highest sporting award in the GDR.

He died in 1990 on the way home from the Nürburgring when a tire burst on his car and his vehicle slipped under a truck. His grave is in the Leubnitz-Neuostra cemetery in Dresden.

His son Ronny has been active in motorsport since 1985.

Melkus won all of his titles in the "racing cars up to 1300 cm³" class. He started for the MC Post Dresden association .

Probably his last great success was the victory in the race on the Schleizer Dreieck in 1987. In the ranking for the Cup for Peace and Friendship , this was only fifth for Melkus and third for the GDR team at the end of the year.
