The Melkus PT 73 Spyder was a derivative of the Melkus RS 1000 and the first vehicle of this type in the GDR . The car was designed and built by Ulli Melkus . Like the RS 1000, the construction was based on the chassis of the Wartburg 353 . Similar to the Melkus 64 , a monoposto , the engine was installed horizontally.

Development history

When developing the RS 1000, Melkus initially thought of a V8 engine from Tatra . But the engine was too heavy and the idea had to be discarded. After attempts to get a replacement engine from AWE failed, a Wartburg engine was used - as with other Melkus vehicles.

The Spyder was with his altered damping at the front axle much better on the road than the closed RS 1000, but the car suffered from constant problems of swing axle . Melkus made the first test drives with the car at Dresden Airport in the spring of 1973 . The vehicle was only partially successful in racing. Melkus realized that it was hardly possible to build a competitive sports prototype on the basis of the RS 1000, and the project was not pursued any further. The car was partially used in the GDR Group B races in the 1970s, but never prevailed against the competition from the RS 1000 and the Wartburg 1150 .
