City library in Eislinger Schloss

history

The establishment of the Eislingen city library emerged from the history of the house. Baron Constantin Adolph von Welden, who acquired the Großeislingen manor in 1765, had the initially two-story building with an attic, along with a few outbuildings and a park, built as a summer house . After the baron's death in 1772, his only son sold the entire property to the Count of Eybach, whose descendants kept the house in family ownership until 1918.

In the 18th century, the small castle was still showing structural damage and the half-timbering was decaying and was replaced in 1779 by a massive wall and an increase in floors up to below the mansard roof. Another repair had to be made at the beginning of the 19th century. The construction of a railway line in 1846, which ran through the count's property, increasingly affected the property. Around 1900, the Eybach counts sold additional land as building land, including for a factory building to the company Zeller + Gmelin, which also acquired the castle in 1918 and had offices and apartments set up there.

In 1977 the city of Eislingen bought the castle. In 1988, based on specific usage concepts and after thorough restoration work, the local council decided to accommodate a city library on two floors, which was set up in 1989.

The castle is the birthplace and long-term residence of Count Götz Christoph von Degenfeld-Schonburg (1806–1895), Wuerttemberg officer and wing adjutant of King Wilhelm I. He lost his position at court in 1853 because of his change of faith to the Catholic Church and belonged to 1856 to 1868 as a member of the second chamber of the Württemberg state parliament .
