The Framo V 501 is a pickup truck that was manufactured by Framo in Hainichen from 1941 to 1943 and from 1949 to 1951 . A special feature of this vehicle is the use of a double piston engine from 1943.

history

The first four-wheeled Framo transporters were produced in 1934. From 1939 the type Framo V 500 was built, followed by the type V 501/1 in 1941/42 . Both were equipped with conventional two-cylinder two- stroke engines. In the middle of the war , the remarkable decision was made to install the U 500 twin-piston engine in the van. The initiative came from the then Framo and DKW boss Rasmussen . The construction resulted in a noticeable increase in output from 9 to 12 kW with the same displacement of the previous engine. In doing so, it was also able to run extremely smoothly for two-stroke engines . However, the cooling of the engine was insufficient. The problem was no longer resolved because series production had to be discontinued in the autumn of 1943 after 1630 vehicles in favor of armaments production. During the war, numerous vehicles were equipped with conversion kits for propane operation.

After Rasmussen's arrest and the dismantling of the Framo factory by the Soviets, the company was reopened in 1946 for the production of the simplest consumer goods. The state-owned company from 1948 continued production of the vehicle, now known as the V 501/2 . Since most of the former suppliers were located within the Soviet occupation zone , stable production was achieved relatively early on. The striking engine concept was not pursued any further and was abandoned in 1951. A total of 2845 copies of the Framo V 501 with double piston engine were produced.
