Schneider studied mechanical engineering in Vienna. In 1927, together with the Voith company in Sankt Pölten, he applied for a patent, the so-called Voith Schneider Propeller . Schneider is the inventor of this ship's propeller, which is both drive and rudder. The propeller generates thrust through an impeller that protrudes vertically from the bottom of the ship. The wings are adjustable. By changing the angle of attack, the amount of thrust and the direction of thrust can be varied.

In 1927/28 the first test boat with a Voith Schneider propeller was built. The excellent maneuverability - it could do a full turn the length of a boat in 10 seconds - inspired the namesake to the name 'Torqueo' (Latin: I turn). The first successful VSP ship was the Lake Constance ship ' Kempten ', which went into operation in 1931 ; the drive can be seen today in the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne. Many harbor tugs , passenger ships on inland waterways , drilling cranes and special ships use this drive today.
