Autistic Pride Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Autism Pride Flag
Some people with autism wear such an awareness ribbon to symbolically express their wish for acceptance by their fellow human beings, whereas other autistic people see the symbol as an insult.

The Autistic Pride Day is held annually since 2005 on June 18 committed. It is intended to express the desire of many autistic adults for social acceptance of their autistic peculiarities.

Proponents of Autistic Pride criticize the pathologization of autism as well as the notion, especially popular among medical professionals, that all human brains should be identical. They argue that the hypothesis of such an ideal and therefore desirable brain structure leads many medical professionals to the assumption that any deviation requires a “cure” in order to achieve conformity with an imaginary “neurologically typical” norm. They follow the principle of neurodiversity .

Some activists believe that trying to cure autism is a form of " ethnic cleansing ." As the lowest common denominator, they all agree that autistic people should be valued more than unique individuals.

Proponents of Autistic Pride point out that homosexuality was once seen as a mental illness and medically tried to "cure" with libido-reducing hormone therapy. This classification was only abolished through the political struggle of the lesbian and gay movement . A persistent expression of this movement is gay pride / queer pride. With Autistic Pride Day, autism activists from the neurodiversity movement hope to initiate the same educational process. Autistic Pride Day campaigns for the basic human rights of people on the autistic spectrum and a place for their individual voices and talents in our society.

Autistic Pride Day was initiated by Aspies For Freedom. Aspies For Freedom advocates the rights of people on the autism spectrum by trying to educate the public through such initiatives.
