Benjamin Gottlieb Gerlach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benjamin Gottlieb Gerlach (born June 7, 1698 in Liegnitz , † June 18, 1756 in Zittau ) was a German educator and author.

Life

Gerlach attended high school in Liegnitz and Breslau . On May 11, 1719 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg and completed a degree in philosophy. During that time Martin Hassen in ethics, Friedrich Strunz in poetry, Jakob Karl Spener in history, Georg Wilhelm Kirchmaier in Greek, Johann Matthias Hase and Johann Friedrich Weidler in mathematics, for example, were his teachers.

Gerlach must have had good intellectual gifts, because after just two and a half years he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy on October 17, 1721. The following day he successfully passed the examination of permission to read for universities as a master's degree and subsequently worked as a private lecturer. However, academic access to the university did not seem possible for him. Therefore, in 1728 he applied for the post of rector of the Wittenberg city school.

Since he had met the demands of Gottlieb Wernsdorf the Elder , he was appointed to his post on June 2nd. However, he did not stay in that position for a long time. On July 5, 1730, he took up the better-paid position of rector at the grammar school in Mühlhausen / Thuringia and became director of the grammar school in Zittau on November 25, 1738, where he worked until the end of his life. The extensive written work he left behind deals with theological and historical topics, biographies and edification writings.
