Life

Heinz Vater was born in Frankfurt an der Oder as the son of the businessman Max Vater and his wife Herta, nee. Weissmann born. Since his mother was Jewish, he was one of the persecuted during the Nazi era as a 'valid Jew' . He then worked as an assistant at the German Academy of Sciences with Wolfgang Steinitz . On September 24, 1961, Heinz Vater fled to the west while a company fighting group was on duty on Bernauer Strasse. Here in Hamburg he defended his doctoral thesis, which had already been successfully accepted in the GDR but had not yet been defended, which was published in 1963 under the title The system of article forms in contemporary German . After a brief activity at the Society for German Language in Lüneburg , he became an assistant at the Institute for General and Comparative Linguistics with Hans Hartmann in Hamburg , where he qualified as a professor in 1969 with a thesis on Danish subject and object sentences . From 1969 to 1972 Heinz Vater was Associate Professor at Indiana University in Bloomington , USA , until he accepted a C4 professorship for German Linguistics at the University of Cologne in April 1972. He taught here until his retirement in July 1997. At the beginning of the new millennium he moved back to Berlin, where he died on June 18, 2015 in a hospital.
