Aubert of Avranches
Autbert or Aubert von Avranches († June 18, 725 in Avranches , Normandy ) was Bishop of Avranches and founder of the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey .
Aubert repeatedly withdrew to the rocky tidal island on which two hermitages had existed since the 6th century . According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared to him in a vision in 708 and asked him to build a chapel on the rocky island. When Aubert paid no attention, the angel reappeared and this time bored his finger into his skull. Construction began after the third apparition and was inaugurated on October 16, 709. For this purpose, Aubert procured relics of the archangel from Monte Sant'Angelo and occupied the church with twelve canons .
After his death, Aubert was buried in the chapel on Mont-Saint-Michel at his request . In 1012 his bones were found, buried in a new shrine and the head kept separately. During the French Revolution , the relics were looted and scattered. A pierced skull is now a relic in St. Gervais Church in Avranches. For a long time it was regarded as prehistoric evidence of a trepanation , but actually seems to date from the Middle Ages.
Aubert is considered a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. His feast day is September 10th.
