Karl Arning

Karl Arning (born February 10, 1892 in Berlin , † November 17, 1964 in Hamburg ) was a German major general in World War II .

Life

Arning joined the army in 1912 as a flag junior. At the end of December 1920 he resigned as first lieutenant.

After the re-introduction of compulsory military service, he joined the armed forces. He served in the Wehrmacht in various positions during World War II. I.a. As commander and colonel of Grenadier Regiment 24 of the 21st Infantry Division , he was awarded the German Cross in Gold on April 30, 1943 and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on October 11, 1943 . From June 1944 to July 1944 he was commander of the 72nd Infantry Division on behalf of Hermann Hohn . Arning then led the 75th Infantry Division as commander until April 1945 . With this he took part in the Lower Silesian Operation , West Carpathian Operation and the Vistula-Oder Operation .

Arning was taken prisoner of war in May 1945, and released in October 1955.
