Rafael Hernández Marín
Rafael Hernández Marín ( "El Jibarito" ; born October 24, 1892 in Aguadilla , Puerto Rico , † December 11, 1965 in San Juan , Puerto Rico) was a Puerto Rican composer .
Live and act
From the age of twelve , Hernández Marín had music lessons from Professor José Ruellán Lequerica , later from Jesús Figueroa . He learned to play the cornet , trombone, tuba, guitar, violin and piano. As a youth he entered the municipal chapel of San Juan, directed by Manuel Tizol . His first composition , a danza entitled María y Victoria , was written in 1912. During the First World War he served in a military band , the Harlem Hellfighter Band of the 369th Infantry Regiment of the US Army in France.
After the war he first went to New York , where he met musicians such as Luis Muñoz Marín , Luis Llorens Torres , Luis Palés Matos and Pedro Flores and then directed the orchestra of the Teatro Fausto in Havana . After four years he returned to New York and founded the Trío Borinquen and, after its dissolution, the Conjunto Victoria .
In 1932 Hernández traveled to Mexico and studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música harmony , counterpoint and composition. After returning to Puerto Rico in 1947, he worked there as a music consultant . From 1956 to 1959 he was honorary president of the Asociación de Compositores y Autores de Puerto Rico . In total, Hernández wrote more than 3000 compositions, including popular pieces such as Silencio , Ausencia , Campanitas de Cristal , Preciosa , El Cumbanchero and Lamento Borincano . The latter was recorded by Alfonso Ortiz Tirado , Gilberto Santa Rosa , Marc Anthony and La India , among others . The airport in his hometown was named Rafael Hernández Airport in his honor .
