Alfonso Ortiz Tirado

Alfonso Ortiz Tirado (born January 24, 1893 in Álamos , Sonora , † September 7, 1960 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican doctor and singer who became known both as an interpreter of boleros and operas.

Ortiz was a trained medic. As such, he taught at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and was a member of the Academia Americana de Cirugía and the Academia Indolatina de Medicina . He specialized in gynecology and later on reconstructive orthopedics and was the general practitioner of the painter Frida Kahlo .

His breakthrough as an opera singer came in 1928 at the Teatro Iris . In 1930 he was awarded a contract with the Victor label for recordings in the United States and broadcasts with NBC , which broadcast his voice for 18 months in the Caribbean and South America.

This led to a contract with the Argentine broadcaster Radio Splendid , where he sang compositions by Agustín Lara , Gonzalo Curiel and María Grever . In 1936 he was honored by the Mexican government for his services to the spread of Mexican music in South America.

With the proceeds of his concert tours, Ortiz founded an orthopedic clinic in 1938. In 1948 he sold this to social security and became director of the Hospital de la Mujer . He also went on numerous concert tours between 1945 and 1953 and won a gold record in 1955 . In the same year he retired from the stage for health reasons. The Alfonso Ortiz Tirado Festival has been held in his hometown since 1984 .
