Systematics of monitor lizards
There are currently over 80 species in the genus of monitor lizards ( Varanus ). The list can be sorted according to all criteria. If sorting is done according to images, then it is sorted primarily according to the presence of an image and secondarily according to scientific name . Scientific names are sorted alphabetically. If you sort by German name, then it is sorted primarily by the presence of a German name and secondarily by alphabetical order. In case of doubt, only the scientific name was listed. If the species are arranged according to distribution, they are sorted primarily according to the categories Africa, Asia and Australia, and secondarily according to alphabetical order of the scientific names. The sorting according to subgenus follows the analyzes of the hemipenis morphology by Ziegler & Böhme (1997) and Böhme (2003). The sorting in clades follows the studies of mtDNA by Ast (2001) and Fitch et al. (2006). Even if the affiliation to a cladus is usually more or less clear, this is only included in the case of an explicit DNA analysis.
For species native to Australia, abbreviations for the states were used to specify the area of distribution more precisely, NT = Northern Territory , QLD = Queensland , WA = Western Australia , SA = South Australia , NSW = New South Wales , ACT = Australian Capital Territory , VIC = Victoria .
