The rusty desert monitor ( Varanus eremius ) is an Australian endemic nature of Squamata from the kind of lizards ( Varanus ). He is counted to the subgenus Odatria . It was first described in 1895 by Lucas & Frost . In the English language , the species is called rusty desert monitor and pygmy desert monitor .
Physique, appearance
This dwarf among the medium-sized monitor lizards reaches a total body length of 50 cm when fully grown. Its upper side shines in a light to dark reddish-brown basic color. Numerous black to deep blue spots are scattered across the skin. Its muscular tail is alternately drawn with cream-colored and deep brown vertical stripes. These often merge into points from the base of the tail to the body. Its underside is whitish in color. A noticeable black stripe arises from the snout and runs over the eyes.
distribution
Varanus eremius lives in Western and Central Australia , in the states and territories of Western Australia , South Australia , Northern Territory and also in a small area in Queensland . The hermit monitor is the most widespread species of the subgenus Odatria . The habitat types he prefers are the vast deserts and semi-deserts typical of Australia .
behavior
This species spends most of its life on the ground and rarely climbs trees. Several dead specimens were dissected while researching food habits . The stomach contents showed that the hermit monitor feeds 76% of other smaller lizards. The rest of the animals eaten were large grasshoppers and occasionally scorpions .
