Finsch's monitor lizard ( Varanus finschi ) is a species of monitor lizard from the subgenus Euprepiosaurus that is native to New Guinea and Australia .

Appearance, physique

Adult animals reach a total length of 120–135 cm. The tail is about 1.6 times as long as the head-torso length . The pattern on the back of the adult specimen consists of a multitude of black eye spots, which are arranged in irregular transverse rows. The spots with a yellowish center decorate the dark gray basic color of his skin. The abdomen and throat are whitish in color. The dark head has numerous yellowish spots. The tongue, which is typical for monitor lizards, is pink in color. The pattern of the young is largely the same as that of the adult, although it is a little more noticeable. Occasionally, the neck and neck of the young are provided with gray speckles. These conspicuous markings on the young fade over time and eventually disappear when they reach sexual maturity. In Finsch's Waran, 158 to 196 scales are arranged around the middle of the body. There are 171 to 199 scales on the back, behind the head, and on the hind legs.

nutrition

Finsch's monitor feeds on crabs , scorpions , grasshoppers and beetles .

distribution and habitat

Finsch's monitor lizards live in Papua New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago . There are also some populations on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland ( Australia ). According to the IUCN, Finsch's monitor lizard is not endangered in its habitat. This is due to the many reserves and protected areas within their area of distribution, since other endangered animal species already live there and because some habitat types are protected as world natural heritage .

Finsch's Waran is named in honor of the German ornithologist Otto Finsch .
