Thomas Ziegler (zoologist)

Thomas Ziegler (born August 17, 1970 in Bonn ) is a German herpetologist . His main research interests are the lizards, snakes and frogs of Southeast Asia .

Life

Ziegler began his scientific career in the 1990s with Professor Wolfgang Böhme . In 1997, in collaboration with Böhme, he revised the internal systematics of the genus Varanus based on the hemipenis morphology . In 2000 he was awarded the dissertation studies on the herpetofauna of lowland moist forest reserve in southern North Vietnam Natural Sciences Mathematics at the Faculty of the University of Bonn to Dr. rer. nat. PhD. This doctoral thesis formed the basis for his first book, The Amphibians and Reptiles of a Lowland Humid Forest Conservation Area in Vietnam , which was published in 2002. In 2003 Ziegler became head of the Cologne aquarium . During his tenure, breeding facilities for rare frogs from Southeast Asia and for the Chinese giant salamander were set up, and in July 2013 the Cologne Aquarium succeeded in breeding the first European crocodile from the Philippines . Since 1999, the Cologne Zoo in the Vietnamese national park Phong Nha-Ke Bang has carried out research and nature conservation projects, in which Ziegler is significantly involved. Since 2008 he has been a member of the IUCN / SSC Amphibian Specialist Group for the Southeast Asian mainland region. His main interests include the biodiversity , systematics and zoobiology of the Southeast Asian herpetofauna , in particular amphibians, monitor lizards , snakes and crocodiles. Since 1994 Ziegler has published more than 260 specialist articles, which mainly deal with the biodiversity of the herpetofauna. Since February 2009 he has been a lecturer at the Zoological Institute (Biocenter) at the University of Cologne .

Ziegler is a member of the German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Science and the Societas Europaea Herpetologica .
