Tylototriton ziegleri is a newt species from the genus of crocodile newts ( Tylototriton ).

description

Tylototriton ziegleri is a medium-sized species of crocodile newts. The head-torso length of the only measured female is 70.8, and of the males 54.4 to 68.3 millimeters. The skin is rough and finely granulated. There are pronounced, bony ridges on the head. Another bar is formed on the back, this runs lengthways in the middle of the back and is conspicuous and segmented. This ridge forms a series of glands. The rib nodes are conspicuous. The extremities are long and thin. When the front and rear legs are pressed to the body, their ends overlap significantly. The tail is thin. The back is blackish, the belly a little lighter in color. The rib nodes, the tips of the fingers and toes as well as parts of the palm and sole of the foot are bright orange. There is also a light orange tinted stripe on the underside of the body from the rump to the end of the tail.

Occurrence and way of life

Tylototriton ziegleri occurs in northern Vietnam in the provinces of Ha Giang and Cao Bang , possibly also in Lao Cai . The species is mainly terrestrial, which means it lives on land and is therefore difficult to find. Specimens of Tylototriton ziegleri have been found in permanent and drying ponds, small wetlands and in flooded areas on rivers. The breeding season is in April and May. Eggs are laid on the ground at a distance of 50 to 60 centimeters from the waterfront and are not guarded by the parents. The hatchlings crawl into the water on rainy days. The metamorphosis of the larvae begins after July. The larvae do not overwinter.

Systematics

Tylototriton ziegleri was first described in 2013 by Kanto Nishikawa , Masafumi Matsui and Tao Thien Nguyen . The species is named after Thomas Ziegler from Cologne Zoo in order to honor him for his contributions to the understanding of the herpetofauna of Vietnam. Within the genus Tylototriton , Tylototriton ziegleri is placed in the Tylototriton asperrimus group.
