The crocodile newts ( Tylototriton ) are a genus of tailed amphibians . Their distribution area extends from the eastern Himalayas over Indochina to southern and central China .
features
The crocodile newts reach a total length of up to 23 centimeters (females of Tylototriton taliangensis ). The females are usually slightly larger than the males. The crocodile newts are closely related to the ribbed newts ( Pleurodeles ). This can be seen in anatomical and morphological features such as exposed rows of warts (rib glands) along the back. Underneath there are rib tips that are bent upwards.
distribution
Specifically, these animals are found in China , North Vietnam , North Thailand , Laos , the northern mountain regions of Myanmar ( Burma ), in northern India (state of Sikkim and the district of Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal ) and in Nepal .
The newts live in moist mountain forests up to 3000 meters above sea level. They are most active in terrarium keeping at temperatures between 16.5 and 19 ° C.
