The pleurodeles ( Pleurodeles ) are a poor genus of salamanders , those on the Iberian Peninsula and in north-west Africa ( Morocco , Algeria , Tunisia occurs).

features

The up to 31 centimeters long animals are related to the Asian crocodile newts ( Tylototriton ). This can be seen in the mating behavior as well as in anatomical and morphological features such as exposed rows of warts (rib glands) along the back. Underneath are rib tips, which in both genera can occasionally even pierce the skin of the body.

The front extremities have four fingers, the rear five fingers, which are webbed together. The tail is compressed laterally, but lower than the body. The fin edge is narrow. In older specimens, the length of the tail exceeds the length of the body.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Karl Michahelles in his article New southern European amphibians in the journal Isis von Oken in 1830 . The type species is the Spanish ribbed newt ( Pleurodeles waltl ). This species was invented by Michahelles after Dr. Waltl, who brought some specimens from southern Spain, where they were often found in Brunnen, to Munich.
